Panelling how easy is it to do?

After seeing lots of people on Youtube transform rooms with pieces of mdf I decided I could do the same deciding to diy 2 walls in one of the small double bedrooms.  The ceiling in this room has a pitch so there was a natural line to follow BUT it was not level as I found out to my dismay when I measured one side and then the other, a difference of 2 cms which for this project was a lot.  With all measurement duly worked out I trotted off to the  not so local B and Q store who I knew had cutting facilities.  The young guy’s face when I told him I was doing the job I think he was either very impressed or felt sorry for me.  Either way he guided the trolley and cut to size mdf strips through the till and wished me good luck.

Marked the wall with spirit level and when “help” was offered by the other half  I refused saying I was doing myself and if I needed help I would ask for it.

Put the top pieces up using a mastic gun for the first time, measured and cut the bottom pieces and finally then measured the vertical strips, all had to be cut down  by hand saw but manged that too.  you will notice that I undercoated the strips before fixing them to the wall which worked out easier when top coating. I am a “mask it before painting ” person so it made sense to do this. Less work….

Finally it started to look like the videos I had avidly watched and was rather pleased with myself. The adhesive stuck and I used decorators caulk to fill in gaps then did a bit of sanding just to tidy up.

Finally did 2 top coats and voila the job was done.  Repeated the process on the opposite wall a few weeks later.

Was it worth the effort? Yes if only to prove I could do it.
